GENERATION THAT NEITHER STUDIES NOR WORKS IN THE NORTHEAST OF BRAZIL

The objective of this study is to trace the demographic and socioeconomic profile of young people classified as “NEET” (Not in Education, Employment or Training) in the Northeast of Brazil, in view of the relevance of the theme and the absence of studies focusing on the region’s youth population. The National Household Sample Survey (PNAD/IBGE) from 1995, 2005 and 2015 is the main source of information. In order to achieve the proposed objective, a description of the investments made in the educational area and programs that seek the insertion of young people in the labor market is initially presented. Then, a descriptive analysis of the profile of young people from the Northeast classified as “NEET” is made, the probability of these people being in such condition is also estimated. The main results reveal that in the Northeast, in 2015, 26.61% of young people aged 15 to 29 neither studied nor worked.
