Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss the evolution in inequality and in the composition of consumer spending for Brazil and regions, using data from the Consumer Expenditure Surveys (POF´s) of 2002-2003, 2008-2009 and 2017-2018. There was a reduction in inequality in the distribution of spending on consumption, especially from 2008-2009 to 2017-2019 in all regions, mainly in the South and Midwest regions. In order to reduce inequalities, health expenditures from 2002-2003 to 2008-2009 stand out, especially in the Northeast and Southeast regions. From 2008-2009 to 2017-2018, housing expenses were instrumental in reducing inequality in the distribution of consumption in all regions, especially in the North. Despite the reduction in inequality in the distribution of spending on consumption, regional heterogeneities in the country are still evident.
