Abstract

This paper approaches the question of optimal allocation of water resources in basin systems, taking as a reference the Formoso basin, in the State of Bahia. The best allocation of the disposable water resources in a basin system may be obtained as the result of an optimization problem in which the joint objectives of all user sectors are taken into account. The result of this problem establishes a sharing of water resources in such a way to equate marginal net benefit among all water users, according to the important principle of multiple uses of water resources. Finally, this paper calls attention for the necessity to congregate efforts in the sense of promoting the multiple use principle of water resources, through a symmetric and harmonious management of these sectors, which takes into account not only the individual goals of each sector, but mainly the global objectives of the whole society.
