Abstract

This paper analyses the technical efficiency of states and regions of Brazil in the period 1985-1998. The methodological framework is based upon the concept of production frontier, where a non-parametric model estimates technical efficiency through Data Envelopment Analysis technique. In addition, Malmquist´s total productivity index has been performed to decompose the gains in productivity into two components: technical efficiency variation and technological variation.
