In the present paper, the costs and revenues, as well as technical indices of productivity, of 292 trips of three different fishing boats (15, 17 and 26m) in overall length, from 1984 to 1994, were analyzed. The crew payment system changed during the studied period, from salary plus commission to shared profit, resulting in a decrease of operational costs and an increase in the crew income. The larger boat showed the best results under the salary payment system, whereas under the shared profit system, the middle size boat was the most efficient. The smallest boat, in turn, showed good results only under the shared profit system and always fared worse than the larger boats. Further studies should be done with a view to gather information that allows an efficient management of the fishery as well as a sustainable exploitation of this important fisheries resource.
