This article aims to contribute for a better water resources management in the State of Ceara through a methodological approach of calculation of the collection value for the use of the water in the basin of Jaguaribe – Ceara – Brazil. After a description of the water potential of the basin of Jaguaribe for the State of Ceara, two methodological approaches used to determine the water cost (US$/m3) are presented: the economic value and the cost of offer the water. The first, based in the economic theory and, therefore, wider, seeks to establish the price of the water that looks for the economic, social and environmental efficiency. The second approach, more restricted, tries to establish the price of the water that is capable to cover the production costs, to help determine a system of water tariff. Finally, the assessed water costs for the Jaguaribe basin are presented and compared to other evaluations.
