Abstract

This paper deals with the modernization of agriculture, classification of counties and the level of land concentratio n in the state of Maranhão. The data used in this study, was obtained from publications of Brazilian Geographic and Statistical Institute – IBGE. To verify technological level and for the classification of counties, factor analysis technique was used. To evaluate land concentration in the State, Gini index was calculated. The results showed constrast in the level of technology used in different counties. It was noted that a small group of farmers is using capital intensive technologies and a large number of farmers are applying traditional rudimentry technology. In relation to land concentration, it was observed that 1% of large farms accounts for 43% of the total farm area. It may he concluded the state of Maranhão represents a great disparity in relation to agricultural technology use in the counties.

Possui graduação em Agronomia - West Pakistan Agricultural University (1968), Mestrado em Economia Agrícola - West Pakistan Agricultural University (1970), Mestrado em Economia - Colorado State University (1973) e doutorado em Economia Agrícola e Recursos Naturais - Oregon State University (1977). Atualmente participa do Programa Especial de Participação de Professores Aposentados da UFC (PROPAP) desenvolvendo atividades de ensino, pesquisa e orientação nos programas de pós-graduação em Economia Rural e pós-graduação em Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente. Participa como Pesquisador Visitante do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Economia Regional e Urbana da Universidade Regional do Cariri (URCA) desde agosto de 2018. Membro do conselho editorial de várias revistas científicas. Tem experiência na área de Economias Agrárias e dos Recursos Naturais, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Agricultura Familiar; Desenvolvimento Sustentável; Inovação Tecnológica e Geração de Emprego e Renda.
