The aim of this paper is examining the income distribution and poverty in Minas Gerais state from 1970 to 1991, focusing on the regional inequalities. It infers that the cross-regional inequalities based on average income have been only one side of the income disparities in Minas Gerais. In the 70’s, there was an increase of Per Capita Average Household Income and a decrease in the cross-regional average income inequalities. Also, the income distribution had stabilized and the poverty had reduced in all regions. The result was negative in the 80’s, when the Per Capita Average Household Income decreased at the same time there was an increase in the cross-regional and within regional inequalities income and poverty. This paper also shows the main role of the Central region on the inequality and poverty state indexes, given its high population concentration. Finally, it shows a high negative correlation between poverty and educational level in the Minas Gerais planning regions, emphasizing the main role of education to explain the different levels of poverty in Minas Gerais.
