This paper examines the contingent of people with sixty or more years of age in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (RMS), and establishes the principles, determinants and restrictions that lead aged people to continue or return to the labor market. This segment of senior citizens has not been satisfactorily studied in Brazil, but due to the fast aging of the Brazilian society and, as a consequence, its growing share in the labor market, it turns out to be much more important and therefore deserves a greater attention from the public sector and the society as a whole. Using data of the Employment and Unemployment Research of the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (PED/RMS), this paper studies the labor force participation of the aged people, through a logit model, emphasizing the contribution of the main elements which affects their decision to return or to continue to work, when the deserved quiet would be the obvious decision. The empirical analysis refutes the hypothesis that the aged people participate of the labor market mainly to be occupied that is, only as occupational therapy.
