Cashew plant has been cultivated in the Brazilian northeastern region in a traditional way, with low technological input. Based on data collected by the National Research Center for Tropical Agro-industry (CNPAT/EMBRAPA) this work was conducted aiming to assess the economical advantages of grafted dwarf cashew under irrigated and non-irrigated planting systems. For the non-irrigated system were evaluated : a) commercial production of nuts, and b) commercial prodution of cashew apple. For the irrigated system were evaluated a) commercial production of nuts, b) commercial production of cashew apple, and commercial production of apple for in natura consumption. The assessment of these alternatives were based upon: internal return rate (IRR), benefit/cost ratio and the period necessary to recover the invested capital. Results revealed a clear superiority of the irrigated system concerned with the simultaneous commercial exploitation of nuts, cashew apple and cashew apple for in natura consumption, which presented an IRR of 91%, which is higher when compared with profits of the financial market. In the same system when only nut production was evaluated, the IRR obtained was 8%, unable to compete with the non-risky alternatives of the financial market.
