The objectives of this research were to study productivity differential between two categories of farmers, and also to calculate the social benefits generated by extension service in the year of 1997. Multiple regression technique and model developed by LINDNER & JARRET (1978), modified by ROSE (1980), were used. It was concluded that rural extension service increases the technical efficiency but did not influence the partial elasticity of production factors. It was observed that neutral technology and difference in input use benefited assisted farmers. It was also noted that extension service generated social benefits for the population of the State of Ceará.
