The economies of Ceará and Maranhão have been displaying a reasonable growth performance in the last thirty years. This outcome was greatly influenced by public policies. The direct public investments – mostly in infrastructure –, or those induced by public action through fiscal incentives, have changed the economic profile of those two states. As the last years were marked by important changes in the perception of the nature and role of public policies, this article will provide a comparative evaluation of the productive structures of those states, using the input-output matrices aiming at verifying the degree of similarity between them. The Rasmussen’s linkage index and the coeficients of linearity were calculated to assess the degree of productive complexity. Some structural differences in the productive systems were observed. Ceará posseses an integrated and diversified economy, where the chemical and textile sectors play an important role, whereas Maranhão shows a productive advantage in basic metallurgy and cellulose industrial complexes.
