A number of works in agricultural economics in less developed areas have discussed the possibility of income diversification towards non-agricultural activities. Considering agriculture an economic activity characterized by seasonal labor demand, temporary jobs on non-agricultural activities should contribute to farmer’s income stabilization. This work analyses farmer’s income strategy between agricultural and non-agricultural employment in Curu-Paraipaba irrigation project on Ceará state (north-east Brazil). The results showed that education and total income had a positive influence on diversification decision. Furthermore, it was also concluded that on-farm and off-farm diversification are competing activities.
