This paper results from consultancy rendered to the 1 st. Regional Superintendence of the São Francisco Valley Development Company (1st. SR/CODEVASF). The general objective was to evaluate the social-economic impacts, origina-ting from the implementation of the irrigated perimeter of Gorutuba, in the cities of Janaúba and Porteirinha, where it is located. The data used in this work are based on the primary and secondary figures, gathered by the UNIMONTES' staff of the Department of Economics and by the authors of the study. The results confirmed the importa nce of the irrigated perimeter as instrument of development policy in areas lacking of alternatives for investments and with potentiality for the irrigated agriculture. The perimeter has been affecting the demand conditions in the area, increasing the level of income through the creation of employment and improvement of salary level. Simultaneously, it has been acting in a favorable way in the supply conditions, by incorporating the pr oduction of the perimeter to the gross domestic product of the region.
