Abstract

The article aims at studying the perspectives of Northeastern sugar cane agroindustry in Brazil. It defines the set of problems faced nowadays by this sector and identifies the main lines of an strategy which can lead it to a higher level of productivity together with more economic utilization of by-products. It stresses, in spite of the problems, the concrete possibilities the sector has to undertake a reestructuring which would lead it to reach competitiveness. In this direction it is essential to change its pattern of management, its financing conditions and the technological level. The strategy proposed takes into consideration certain experiences in progress in the sector involving more dynamic enterprises. It defends that a policy of technological modernization should be implemented in articulation with more dynamic entrepreneurs in Northeast whose logic, as part of a competitve oligopoly, combines with higher productivity and diversification. The results, nevertheless, would be conditioned by an environment of heterogeneity and may show a high degree of distinction.

João Policarpo Rodrigues Lima, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco

Possui graduação em Economia pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (1973), mestrado em Economia pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (1977) e doutorado em Economia - University of London (1988). Pós-doutorado na University of North London (2000). Atualmente é Professor Titular da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Tem experiência na área de Economia, com ênfase em Economia Aplicada, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: economia brasileira, desenvolvimento regional, Nordeste do Brasil, agroindústria canavieira, arranjos produtivos, inovação e desenvolvimento local.

Abraham Benzaquen Sicsú, Fundação Joaquim Nabuco

Possui graduação em Engenharia de Produção pela Universidade de São Paulo(1976), especialização em Garantia de Controle de Qualidade pelo Instituto Brasileiro da Administração da Qualidade(1977), mestrado em Economia pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco(1980) e doutorado em Economia pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas(1985). Atualmente é PROFESSOR ASSOCIADO da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco e Revisor de periódico da Navus Revista de Gestão e Tecnologia. Tem experiência na área de Economia, com ênfase em Economia Industrial. Atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas:Energia, Mudancas Tecnologicas, Planejamento.
