Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the economic growth of the State of Bahie and its prospects for future development. Firstly, is shown the structural changes in the 70's. Secondly, the effects of these transformations upon the local economy in the 80's are examined. In this same part, the performance of its main economic sectors-petrochemical, metalurgy, agro-industry and civil construction is stressed. This is followed by an explanation of the most recent economic growth, from 1990 to 1994, aa a result of pattems of behaviour of four sectors petrochemical pulp and paper, agro-industry and tourism. Finally, analyses how the relationship between these sectors and the actual Brazilian economic policy can influence the future evolution of the local economy.
