Abstract

The paper analyses the convergence of per capita incomes of the states of Brazil during the period 1970-1992. It comes to the conclusion that there was convergence until 1985, with consequent softening of interregional inequality. Such convergence depends on intensity of public and private investments in undeveloped areas. The work suggests that the oscillation of relative per capita incomes (as well as the indicators of inequality), between 1986 and 1992, are result of business cycles, not of long-term trends, necessarily.
