This work analyses the destruction of the Brazil nut tree on small-holdings in the south of Pará, as a function of land invasions, clandestine harvest, and fires. A conceptual model is developed de- monstrating that, as a consequence of risk aversion, colonists may find extraction of Brazil nut inferior to cutting the trees and devoting cleared land to food crops and pasture. We use this model with cur- rent data to show that prevailing interest rates and prices are likely to result in the destruction of extractive reserves
