The modern approach to study economic development hi- ghlights the importance of empirical studies involving the experien- ces of different countries in their strategies to achieve economic growth. The idea is that economic development is more a question of appropriate economic policies than a question of structural cha- racteristics of each economy. Some points of the economic deve- lopment strategies adopted by Brazil and South Korea since the early '60s are compared, in an attempt to explain the superior economic performance of the latter in the period. The study supports the importance of appropriate economic policies in the process of eco- nomic development.
