Abstract

This paper focuses on Pernambuco's sugar cane agroindustry and its main problems, which are linked to low productivity which, on its turn, is due to unsatisfactory levels of technology and managing caused by excessive and historical pattern of paternalistic state intervention. It stresses the need of re-structuring the sector in a strategy which includes the closing down of unfeasible mills, technological changes and diversification.
