In this article, the author analyses the perfomance of the economy of Ceará state in the 80's. Its main objective is to emphasize the structural aspects of the macroeconomic dyna- mics existing in that period. Firstly it is stressed that the local economy has grown at higher rates than the national economy; this is due, particularly, to the growth of the Tertiary Industry, while the Primary Industry has shown a clear stagnating ten- dency. Moreover, it has been found a highly significant positive correlation between the growth of the national and local econo- mies, especially due to the leading role of the Tertiary Industry in the recent growth process. Finally, some social welfare indi- cators are analysed showing that even though some improve- ments have ocurred in this aspect they were not enough to reduce, in a significant way, the extremely low living conditions of the population of Ceará.
