MICRO E PEQUENAS INDÚSTRIAS DO VALE DO SÃO FRANCISCO SERGIPANO: PERFIL E PERSPECTIVAS DE CRESCIMENTO

This article presents the profile of micro e small enterprises in São Francisco Valley, Sergipe state, and of its owners. Also addresses the growth perspectives of these companies based on selected indicators and as well on owners perspectives. Adopting structured questionnaire, data were collected by personal interviews with 31 business owners in 15 districts of the region. The majority of interviewees have finished high school, are male and were born in the same district where the industry is installed. These industries are operating in traditional sectors, are family property business, are centralized and do not comply with legal requirements aspects regarding employees rights or health and safety. The main problems these companies are facing are related to finance or sales. Despite the decline of national economic growth in Brazil, the companies of the study seem to be growing as the majority of them have bought lately new equipment, extended they plant, contracted new employees and introduced new products. The perception of owners in relation to their businesses growth are contradictory because while growth indicators are found to be positive very few of them seem to perceive growth possibilities to their companies.
