Demand projections for fruits during the next years indicate growth in internal and external markets. Within this context, this work aims at presenting the perspectives for fruit production, emphasizing aspects related to the comparative advantages of Brazil, and more specifically those of the Northeast region, for tropical fruit production. Additionally, the paper presents a reflection about some factors that limit fruits exports from Brazil and some considerations related to tendencies of tropical fruit production under the perspective of some of the factors that determine the demand. Finally, it is concluded that for tropical fruit production to compete in a global economy the following points have to be considered: organoleptic quality, food security, use of agricultural practices that preserve the environment and prices.
