Scarcity of water is among the fundamental causes of the poverty that besets the rural population in the Bahian savanah, notably the small producers, thus adding pressure to the migratory movement toward urban centers. Irrigation is admitedly essential in order to attenuate the condition of poverty, but is often inaccessible due to the lack of adequate energy supply. In this context, solar energy converted in electricity by photovoltaic cells is a viable alternative in small and remote communities, and offers conditions for increased competitiveness of family-scale agriculture.
