The study sought to measure the indirect effect of parents’ education on the school performance of children studying in the 3rd year of high school in urban and rural Brazilian public schools, in the subjects of Portuguese Language and Mathematics, through mediation, which is the type of school they attend, whether they are full-time or not. The Causal Mediation Effect method applied to the SAEB 2017 data was used. The results show that parents’ education level positively and significantly influences students’ performance on test scores. This effect is enhanced by full-time schools, especially for students from rural schools and when mothers have completed higher education. The results found allow us to suggest two important paths for better performance, which are the expansion of full-time schools and the increase in parents’ education level, as these characteristics are important for the good performance of students
